Adventures in the Rainbow Vortex

01/05/08

Adventures in the Rainbow Vortex is a demonstration in the style of video art performance that I have developed, arranged in a 3 volume DVD set. Volumes 1 and 2 are finished. Release here is imminent. I will be promoting these DVDs to larger organizations in hopes of finding a proper distribution channel for this and future video output that I compose. I will try to have some previews on youtube in the next week, and a bittorrent release of each volume shortly after that. Stay tuned!

The Vostek Anthology 1998-2007: Now Available!

10/18/07

After 10 years and 1000s of hours of work, The Vostek Anthology is complete. $20 for a DVD filled with over 150 songs in lossless quality sound! This is the first time my music has been available at a quality higher than MP3. Navigate to my music page for information and purchasing. I can't express how this collection encompasses my journey. It speaks not only of sound, but of my life as a whole. Maybe now I can move on......to a new perspective on art and creative expression.

Overmind Works- Circuit 6: Vibration 10/14/07 Cheers to Tim, Eric, Mika, and all the guys at the Overmind Works collective for throwing a great party out in the desert this weekend and having me VJ until the Sun showed up. I met a lot of great people and saw a lot of familiar faces. With the production values and effort that went into this free party, it is clear these guys are doing it for the love of it. Look for Circuit 7 and 8 later this year. Visit overmindworks.com for more info. Netlabel Release 09/29/07 Kahvi Records has released three tracks from my E.P. 'Clearance Instation'. Yay! I'm working on some exciting things. First, I am in the process of compiling my entire catalog of compositions into an mp3 CD that will be for sale on my website here. It will include about 10 albums worth of material from the past 9 years, plus unreleased tracks. Some of it will also be remastered and in a higher quality format than has been available previously. Some of these albums have not been available online for 5+ years. I should have it for sale online in a couple weeks for $20. Good deal, yes? As for new music, well, this back catalog project is my way of defining this juncture in my life, a way of moving on to a different form and a different intention. My other major project is to release a 2-hour DVD by the end of the year which will be about 50% pre-2007 music videos, and 50% material from my most recent work. Post Burn 09/7/07 So, Burning Man was pretty much ineffable, though I will try with whatever words I can find to describe the experience. First of all, I love you all. There were so many people that touched my heart in many different ways, whether they realized it or not. Participation is what the event is all about, and the energy that resulted from 44,000 participants was an amazing feeling to be a part of. Most special thanks to the Opulent Temple for hosting me as a VJ for the week. I played early evening on Wednesday for the white party, and that was a great warm-up. Later in the night I met VJ Fader in the Opulent crowd as he was projecting visuals directly onto the white clothing of the people dancing. Quite surreal. In his words, "the people become the canvas". As far as VJing, the real fire occured Saturday night after the burning of the Man. I VJ'd to a crowd of hundreds (thousands?) for 4 hours straight, and it was probably the most solid set I have ever played. I was consistently surprising myself with the visuals I was putting out, and that was when I realized I've accomplished my dream. I have created a way of VJing that is so dynamic and configurable in real-time that I am constantly uncovering new possibilites through an interface that has become second-nature to my creative expression. Some people say that we as humans are merely light perceiving light. Being a VJ blurs the line even more. Other highlights include Monday night leading up to the Lunar eclipse. I was born the morning after a full lunar eclipse, and on this night last week I re-experienced birth in a state of sustained ecstatic bliss. The soft hairs of warm breathing space-time tickled, caressed, and curled around me like a tightly wrapped blanket. I was gripped and swaddled like a baby. Stepping into the deep Playa for the first night, I cried and laughed in amazement at the radiant movement all around me. In the Burning Man Pavillion (luckily I got there before the man was burned by arson later that night), a feeling I had never felt rung through me in a deep resonance of energy. The light reinvigorated my spirit, charging it like a battery. The awareness of this transmission was as lucid as a punch in the face, which is to say it permeated and affected every nerve of my body and every synapse of my brain. Speaking of synapses....oh, I've already said too much, and these words are doing little describe my personal experience. more video 08/10/07 This week I made a 14 minute VJ recording and then spent a some time post-editing it to refine the intention. It is set to a psytrance mix set called Shamanic State, available here. Another Promotion Video 08/06/07 This video further exhibits my developing style and shows off some of the feedback-style effecting I work with in real-time. I hope you like it! For Promotional Use Only. Media update! 08/02/07 I'm going to Burning Man this year. As an exercise in the weeks leading up to it, I will be making video for the Internet to have at the rate of 1 video per week. My first entry is a little performance recording I made today, it really gets moving in the last 1/3 of the video. Click here to download the high quality version (104 MB) for the full effect, or for streaming click on the player below. A note about what this is, well, it represents an example of what I've been developing all summer, a technique to use light as a fluid instrument. Fractalizing fractals, or in other words, chaos feeding back on itself to create infinitely possible manifestations of resonating light patterns. This page will still be reserved for updates on my artwork and performances etc. Dreamtime Space 07/26/07 This past week I had the opportunity to help in the production the Dreamtime festival in Paonia, CO. On Thursday it started raining during the Native American opening ceremony. As soon as the ceremony ended, the rain stopped and a jaw-dropping full-on double rainbow appeared over the land, the most vivid I have ever seen. The whole festival went wild, and that pretty much set the stage for the whole weekend. It was really great to meet and share such a peaceful space with so many people and to reconnected with a many I had met last month at Gaian Mind. I was totally blissed out to VJ for 11 hours over 3 nights, thanks to the Soul Mate bar for the complimentary Kombucha and Yerba Mate! Eve though I was working I still found time to hang out and attend some great workshops as well. Cheers to Boris/Videolicious and Jan/Photosynthetic for making the visual production come together despite all the snags we encountered. Utmost Respect to the Gaian Mind 06/26/07 I had the benefit of experiencing the Gaian Mind Festival this past weekend. As a whole, the collective represents a wonderful culmination of many subcultures that have come before it, the manifestation of a beautiful collective vision. It was my first big Psytrance festival (and it was a great honor to do some VJ'ing as well), but it was much more than that. It was camping and communing with nature away from the ills of modern civilization. This Festival really encompasses all that is worthy of celebration in this life and time, and I hope to be there with it as it evolves into the future. Into the Horizon Line 06/04/07 Electro-Music 2007 was a blast as always. It will take me a little while for the whole experience to soak in, but for now I will name-drop some of my favorite performances from the weekend: Bradford Reed http://pencilina.com/ Vytear http://www.myspace.com/vytear Project Ruori http://ruori.org/ Fluorescent Grey http://www.recordlabelrecords.org/lotf.html Plork Beat Science http://plork.cs.princeton.edu/beatscience/ John Boehr and Jack Tamul http://www.evergladesmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/masterdome Thanks to all the participants for being such a great audience and community. Special thanks to Vytear, Flourescent Grey and gEars for having me VJ to their performances, and also to Vytear for letting me crash at his house. Big ups to Dr. T for collaborating on the visuals for my performance, and also during Fluorescent Grey's performance. There will soon be loads of event pictures posted, and I will link them here. I've started a travelblog to document my journey around the country this summer. http://vostek.blogspot.com Check it out for captured words, images, and sounds. I want to get into the habit of making a composition (and posting it) every week. I will post those to the blog, and at the end of the summer I will complile them to an album that I will host here, on vstk.org. Upcoming Events 04/30/07 Univeristy of Arizona Mall, 12pm, along with the Tucson Electronic Musicians Society. 05/19/07 "Autopoiesis" at the Splinter Brothers and Sisters Warehouse at 901 N. 13th Ave in Tucson, AZ 06/01/07 Electro-music 2007 in Philadelphia, PA nothing= perfect 02/18/07 It has been unanimously decided that High Density Distractions is unfinished work and should hereforth be considered demos, not a final album. People seem to be enjoying Clearance Instation (or so they say), so I think I'll leave that one alone for now. I'm on my way to correcting the pet peeves, but I'm also not going to stress about it, as I have life to live and other music projects to pursue. With that said, I may have finished versions online tomorrow, or I may take a couple weeks. That should do it 02/07/07 OK, I now have zip files of the new albums available for ease of download, and most of the artwork is up. I updated quite a few of the tracks, jsut minor changes that I thought had already been resolved. Ya know, I could keep working on these pieces forever, but there comes a point when I just need to let it go. That time is now. There's too much to explore to get caught up in any one thing for too long! Choose a path and see it through 02/03/07 New albums, High Density Distractions and Clearance Instation are in the process of being uploaded over the next couple days, along with a modification/simplification of the site layout. I also uploaded a song to the 'Singles' section, and rotated the 'Past selections". I'm looking for a netlabel to help distribute High Density Distractions. Kahvi will be hosting Clearance Instation. I will post details about that when it happens. Still haven't uploaded new video, but that should change now that I have new audios out of the way. As usual, these are Creative Commons (share-alike) releases, which means they are free for you to play and transer to other devices, as long as I retain credit for the work. Of course, donations are accepted and welcome; I did put an obscene amount of time into this music.
